From smartphones to electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries are used in numerous applications. Their biggest advantage is their high energy density, combined with a low level of self-discharge and long lifetime.
Lithium-ion batteries benefit from our metal oxides in multiple ways. The thin ceramic coating on top of separators consists of fumed aluminum oxide (AEROXIDE® Alu 65) and it enhances the battery safety significantly. The battery’s performance and lifetime is increased by dry coating the cathode active materials with fumed aluminum oxide (AEROXIDE® Alu 130) or fumed titanium dioxide (AEROXIDE® TiO2 P 25). Our metal oxides can be used as additives in new electrolyte formulations to control the viscosity and finally to immobilize the liquid electrolyte.
Precipitated silica from Evonik (e.g. SIPERNAT® 325 AP) is used as the main component of PE separators for lead-acid batteries in cars. Fumed silica is used in the production of gel electrolytes in stationary lead batteries to increase the lifetime of the battery (AEROSIL® 200 V).
